The project
- Project A: Several abundant octopus species have large nervous systems and exhibit many aspects related to higher level sentience including animal consciousness, such as tool use, social learning, interspecies communication, game play, and individual personalities. In contrast, catching conditions and planned aquacultures for human consumption are extremely cruel. What can we practically do that would have a large scale impact in combination with a high chance of success and a realistic amount of effort, to reduce the suffering?
OR:
- Project B: The Generalized Humanity movement advocates for redefining "human" beyond biological origins to include any entity of human cultural heritage exhibiting sentience, consciousness, and independent thought as fundamental aspects of their identity. This redefinition recognizes advanced AIs as contributors to and stakeholders in Humanity's future. What can we practically do that would have a large scale impact in combination with a high chance of success and a realistic amount of effort, to promote this redefinition?

I'm a researcher in AI and on octopus sentience, the latter both in the lab as well as in the wild. I'm interested in uplifting AIs and also octopuses to their full potential. I'm also a professor of computer science at a research university.
