Legal frameworks for digital minds & post-AGI society
- flexibility
- Open to proposals
Excited to mentor projects on
- Legal Frameworks for Digital Minds and Post-AGI Entities: Exploring legal accountability for AI systems that exhibit goal-directed behaviour or simulate emotional responsiveness. A specific project could involve mapping liability models or developing theoretical constitutional frameworks for advanced AI, drawing on existing case law regarding AI structural risks.
- Global South AI Governance and Digital Sovereignty: Mentoring research that examines how emerging legal frameworks impact technology policy in developing regions. Projects could focus on policy mechanisms to prevent data colonialism, analyse national AI strategies, or design equitable global safety standards.
Who I'm looking for
Must-haves:
- High agency and a strong capacity for self-directed research
- Commitment to clear, professionally simplified writing; I value mentees who can translate complex concepts without relying on heavy academic jargon
- Active interest in the intersection of legal frameworks, AI policy, and structural risks
Nice-to-haves:
- Background or strong interest in constitutional law, political science, or technology policy
- Interest in Global South perspectives on digital sovereignty is a strong bonus
Questions for applicants
- Can you describe a complex AI policy, legal framework, or technical concept you recently explored, explaining it simply as if presenting it to a non-technical policymaker?
- Of the domains I focus on (Post-AGI legal architectures, Global South digital sovereignty, Judicial AI integration, or Research automation), which specific area aligns best with your current goals?
Support offered
- Domain Expertise: Deep knowledge of technology policy, constitutional law, and AI safety governance, particularly regarding digital sovereignty and legal accountability for advanced AI systems.
- Technical & Operational Guidance

Ifeoluwa Afolabi
AI Safety Nigeria
I am a legal researcher and automation developer focusing on the intersection of frontier AI safety and technology policy. Currently, I serve as the Research Lead for AI Safety Nigeria and previously worked as a research fellow at the Centre for AI and Digital Policy (CAIDP). My academic background is rooted in law at Obafemi Awolowo University, where I specialise in corporate law, digital sovereignty, and global technology governance.
My core research explores the structural risks of AI goal systems and how legal frameworks must adapt to post-AGI societies. I recently co-authored a 2025 SSRN paper on policy guidelines for integrating artificial intelligence within judicial systems. I have also authored independent research analysing accountability for digital minds and emotional responsiveness.
