The project

  • Systematic literature review on databases (for detail on the methods, contact me please)
  • Output: Peer reviewed Article
  • Other projects that fit the incubator period are also available, depending on the candidate's background (life sciences, social sciences, etc.). However, the above-mentioned project is our priority one.

The mentee's role

  • The mentee will be guided through the methods associated with conducting a systematic literature review on Scopus, Web of Science, and Scielo platforms. No previous experience with systematic literature review is required.
  • Then, they will conduct the literature review in conjunction with me based on previously assigned complex queries. Another student within our program PARP might join us and collaborate to achieve a dual reviewer screening (or another coordinator of our PARP program)
  • For our Lit review project, institutional access to Scopus and Web of Science is required, and access to NVivo or MAXQDA is a plus (but not compulsory).
  • Those without institutional access to Scopus and Web of Science are still eligible for other projects (these depend on the student's academic background) . Feel free to contact me.
  • We expect to publish cojointly!
  • As a new PARP intern, you might be given the opportunity to conduct fielwork with primates in Brazil after the incubator period is over (in São Paulo state | at an UNESCO Heritage site/forest)

Who I'm looking for

  • Those without institutional access to Scopus and Web of Science are still eligible for other projects (these depend on the student's academic background) . Feel free to contact me.
  • As a new PARP intern, you might be given the opportunity to conduct fieldwork with primates in Brazil after the incubator period is over (in São Paulo state | at an UNESCO Heritage site/forest)
  • Applicants from different academic disciplines and interdisciplinary backgrounds are very welcome, but strong interest in cognition and nonhuman personhood is essential
  • Primate lovers are a plus! As is interest in Human-Primate interfaces
  • Organization (our project requires a high level, step-by-step documentation)
  • Interdisciplinary thinking and analogical reasoning - we approach cognition and personhood from at least 6 different disciplinary perspectives (please visit our website for more info!)
  • If you speak one or more languages, this is also a plus and these skills will be integrated into our work! At PARP, we work mostly in English, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, or French, and to a more limited extent, also German, Italian, Japanese, Danish, and Tupi Guarani Nhandeva (a Brazilian indigenous language). Speakers of minority and Indigenous languages are especially welcome (however, communication within the team may need to take place in English). Multilingual backgrounds can amplify the scope of the systematic literature review.
  • We welcome both neurotypical as well as neurodivergents. We have a very mixed team so that each person contributes in their unique way.

The program: I lead the Primate Anthrozoology Research Program (PARP), an interdisciplinary research initiative with connections across several academic and research institutions. We welcome opportunities to mentor students whose interests align with the program’s broad scope (please, check the website), particularly at the intersections of human–primate relations, primate behaviour and cognition, decolonial conservation, linguistic and social anthropology, STS, and related fields. Our technology axis is directly related to AI. Students may also have opportunities to develop projects involving fieldwork with primates in Brazil, although fieldwork is by no means a requirement for mentorship. PARP has ties to universities and to a Brazilian NGO that has been dedicated to primate research and conservation for 25 years.

Bio: I am a sociocultural anthropologist with background in STS, and I have training in cognitive sciences and cultural primatology. I have specialized in human-primate communication, interspecies socialization, personhood, mixed methods, and more recently; AI cognition and AI applicability to primate conservation. I have conducted research in 9 countries across 5 continents. I am a big fan of symmetrical anthropology and mixed methods across humanities/social sciences and life sciences :)
