A 10-week program matching fellows with mentors to work on projects aimed at improving the welfare of future sentient beings.
Deadline: July 8.
Learn more about mentoring.
Mentee applications open July 12. Learn more about the program below.
overview
Browse. First, explore the selection of mentors below. Some mentors are offering pre-defined projects to join, while others are open to mentoring fellows who propose their own project ideas. You can apply to up to three mentors – choose carefully.
Ideate. If proposing your own project, take some time to develop an idea that is both feasible to execute and addresses a real need. Our brief ideation guide outlines the types of projects we’re excited to see, includes sample ideas, and highlights potential funding opportunities you could build toward. Consider whether you’d like to put together a team, or apply as an individual.
Execute. Over 10 weeks, you’ll work with your mentor (weekly check-ins + independent work) to deliver a finished, standalone output – or, for larger efforts, a strong intermediate output with a clear plan (and potentially a funding proposal) to take it to completion.

cause areas
-
The future could be vast and radically different. If we can reliably influence the long-term future, it could be the most promising way to help sentient beings.
-
Most animals are wild, and most wild animals perish before adulthood. We support both research and direct work focused on understanding and reducing wild animal suffering.
-
Some of the most intensively farmed animals, including fish, crustaceans, and insects, are currently under-prioritized. We support projects and work seeking to aid the most numerous and neglected farmed animal groups.
-
As AI transforms the way we work, animal welfare and suffering reduction advocates will need to integrate new tools into their workflows in order to maximize their impact. Our incubator seeks to generate new tools and projects that help multiply the impact of aligned advocates.
-
How will narrow AI capabilities and deployments impact animal welfare? (e.g. AI-empowered factory farming, welfare monitoring, alt-proteins).
-
AGI could soon radically transform society in a myriad of ways. We support projects that help make the transition to a post-AGI society go well.
-
The development of artificial sentience introduces risks of large-scale (and new depths of) suffering. We support projects that help ensure the future goes well for all sentient beings, whether biologically evolved or artificial.
-
We support projects that address the big-picture strategic questions shaping the long-term future. With rapidly advancing technology, this kind of macrostrategy and prioritisation work is essential for helping the suffering-reduction community stay oriented, make robust decisions, and ‘do the most good’ that they can.
